Puerto Vallarta Summer 2007

My friend and former room mate Mark G and I went to Puerto Vallarta the summer of 2007. We stayed at this gay boutique hotel call Mercurio. It was really wonderful, the staff were incredibly friendly (as Mark can attest) - we had a great little bar next to the pool with the sweetest bartender.

After a bit of a tour that included this really cool roof top bar at the Blue Chairs Hotel we decided that were going to get all the guys together poolside for a little greet 'n meat. No one told us that the pool wasn't clothing optional. oops.

Anyway we all made plans to meet up at some gay bar and went up to our rooms to get ready. This one guy was wandering the rooms looking for some fun, unfortunately we found out he was also looking for a bit more.

After a bit of play the guy went to wash up and Mark noticed that his money clip was missing from the dresser, I busted in on the kid - shook him down and recovered the money clip and a credit card. He ran out the door and we notified the staff. We didn't know his name, and at the time it didn't occur to us to share the photos we had taken. The next day we did however and I'm sure the staff put them to good use. ;)

We went to dinner with one of the fellas, and he took us to this great bar called La Noche. I suppose it was an off night and kinda late because they were just about to close and we were the only ones in there. I don't know why or how or what, but Mark and dude ended up on the bar top, naked. (One thing I've gotten to know about Mark, is that he is pretty quick to have his pants down no matter where he's at - God love him.)

La Noche is a fun bar, even when guys have their shorts on.

After that, this twink / beach mosquito / aspiring-drag queen cornered me at an after hours club called Mananas [cool club, always packed and had a pool in the middle-which made dancing a little scary when the club was over flowing] So, Super Wendy decided that he was going to attach himself to me for the rest of my stay. Being a charitable sort, and always up for an uncut latino lad, I agreed. After a day at the beach of paying for his food, shots and beers the novelty soon wore off.

Mark and his friends had an intervention, I told Super Wendy he needed a new daddy. Un phased, he was buzzing around the other palapas soon enough in search of his next friend. A true entrepreneur. You go Wendy!

[update 2010: someone who had read this story and also knew him wrote me and said:]

"I've known him for years, as my mother and I go to P.V. three times a year. Although he had asked for money, we never gave him any. BUT we
did let him eat with us, and he showed us around everywhere. He was also very protective of me like I was his little sister. He called my
mother "Mama" because he hadn't had contact with his mother in a couple of years. When he finally got contact with her, he took my
mother and I out to Najarit via bus to meet his entire family. I understand that he was known for going around like a stray dog, living
off of tourists, but in all seriousness, we were close. Through good times and bad, he was there for me. He threw me a birthday party on
the beach, with balloons, a cake made out of pink Twinkies, HUGE bundles of flowers and gifts for me. I couldn't imagine how he could
have afforded it, but he did it. He woke me up on my birthday and told me to come to the beach. It was the kindest thing anyone had
ever done for me. I will always think of him as this boy. I know he was sad on the inside, I could see he was a very lost soul. He was
far away from home, shunned from his family , The past year and a half, he's vanished. Nobody knows where he is, and is saying very
little about what they may or may not know. Just know that inside this "twink / beach mosquito / aspiring-drag queen" was a very sweet boy,
who didn't know how else to live. I just thought I would share the other side of him. Thanks."

I guess sometimes I don't see the whole picture when I'm in the middle of it, and regretfully judge situations from my cozy & comfortable perspective. mer
